American Museum of Natural History

Summer 2019, New York, NY

I participated in AMNH's renovation of the Hall of the Pacific Northwest Coast including deinstallation, treatment, and reinstallation of the collection of over 1,000 objects from the many communities in the Pacific Northwest.

AMNH conservators collaborated with leaders, scholars, and artists from the Indigenous and First Nations communities represented in the Hall.

The lab treated numerous small objects in the Anthropological Objects Lab. Additionally, a large team worked on the monumental carvings, or "totem poles," in a large converted lab space.

Skokomish Basket

Solo treatment in the Anthropological Object Lab.

Treatment included surface cleaning, mechanical and Japanese paper repairs to tears and broken elements, and mock-ups for replacement loops.

Gitxsan White Owl

Treatment of a section of the monumental Gitxsan pole "White Owl", as part of the conservation team working on treating the carvings for reinstallation.

The project included photography and documentation of the entire pole in ultraviolet and normal illumination. Treatment was performed on a smaller loss to the carving, including wood consolidation, stabilization, epoxy fills, and inpainting.
